7.7 Force, motion, and energy. The student knows that there is a relationship between force, motion, and energy. The student is expected to:

1. Review simple machines.
2. Review science vocabulary.
Lever A plank that rests on something underneath and moves up and down.

Wheel and Axle A simple machine used to move objects across a distance using a round part (wheel) and a long part (axle). Cars have wheels and axles.

Inclined Plane A simple machine that has a gently sloped surface so it can be used to move objects upwards with less force. Ramps are examples of inclined planes.

Pulley is a wheel that carries a flexible rope, cord, cable, chain, or belt on its rim.


3. Make a pumpkin pulley.

- Pumpkins can get gigantic!
- Prize winning pumpkins can be over 2,000 pounds (that’s a ton!) and win thousands of dollars in prizes.
- These pumpkins get so big that cranes are needed to move them.
- Today, we’ll make a pulley that works like a crane.
- We can use a jack-o-lantern bucket and yarn.

4. Make a pumpkin racer.
- Try making a pumpkin racer.
- If you don’t have all the supplies (wheels, axles, wingnuts, etc.) then just tape a mini pumpkin to a toy car or roll the pumpkin itself and test your vehicle on any inclined plane you have handy.
- Pay attention to all of your variables: the size, shape and weight of your pumpkin and your car, the angle of the inclined plane, the texture of the surface, etc.
- Predict how far your car will go and test your hypothesis.
5.Pumpkin Chunkin’: Make a catapult.
- You’ve seen this before on Generation Genius.
- Aim marshmallows or soft candies (like those little pumpkins) at acceptable targets.
- Explore how the amount of force you apply affects how far the marshmallow goes.
