Routine Cleaning This is what most people go to the dentist for. You should have your teeth cleaned at the dentist every 6 months. They can clean deeper than you can with your toothbrush.

Dental Hygienist They work in dentist’s offices. They went to a special school to learn how to clean and take care of teeth.

Scaler A tool that scrapes off plaque and tartar.

Dental X-Ray Pictures taken with a special camera that can see through skin and teeth.

This picture shows some permanent teeth pushing out baby teeth.

3. Plaque Attack! Make plaque.

Plaque eats sugar. Try an experiment to see how adding sugar causes plaque to increase enough to cause tooth decay.

Ingredients:

2 clear plastic cups
2 packets of yeast
1 tablespoon of sugar
Warm water

Instructions:

Put one packet of yeast into each cup.
Add warm water to both
Add 1 tablespoon of sugar to only 1 cup.

Bonus Activity: Make a model of teeth!

Materials

Red construction paper
Pink construction paper
Mini marshmallows
Scissors
Glue

Instructions

Create you mouth by cutting an oval in pink construction paper.
Count 32 mini marshmallows and divide into 2 equal groups of 16.
Starting in the middle, glue 2 mini marshmallows, working your way out until all 16 teeth are on the bottom. Repeat on top.
Glue the tongue on the bottom part of the mouth.
Let dry completely.
Once dry, close the mouth craft. Glue the long strip on the top part of the mouth craft. (The fingers will go inside the strip to open and close.)
