Fossil A fossil is evidence of past life on Earth

Paleontology The branch of science that studies fossils of animals and plants

Sedementary Rock They are made when sand and mud gets laid down in layers. Over time, these layers are squashed under more and more layers. Eventually, the layers turn into rock.

Bone bed A layer in the earth containing large quantities of fossilized animal remains


3. Model the formation of rock.
Instructions:
- We will use mini chocolate chips to represent different types of rocks. You can use different flavors.
- Place a handful of your chips into a sealed bag.

- Crush the chips with a rolling pin or your hands. This represents the weathering of rocks into smaller pieces. Over time, pressure will turn these pieces into sedimentary rocks.
- Squeeze the bag in your hands for a minute or two to create pressure and just a little heat. With increased heat and pressure, your rocks could go through a change, and become metamorphic rocks.

- Check out your squished together metamorphic rock! You may have to use a spoon to eat it from the bag, but if it were fully cooled, it would look something like this:

- If you melted your rock completely, and allowed it to cool, you would mimic the formtion of igneous rock.
