Animal & Plant Life Cycles

TEKS & Objectives

7.12.C recognize levels of organization in plants and animals, including cells, tissues, organs, organ systems, and organisms;

7.14 The student knows that reproduction is a characteristic of living organisms and that the instructions for traits are governed in the genetic material

7.3.B use models to represent aspects of the natural world such as human body systems and plant and animal cells

We will explore how living things grow and change over time.

I will identify significant points in metamorphic life cycles.

1. Watch video.

GG Animal and Plant Life Cylces 3-5

2. Review vocabulary.

Life Cycle A series of stages a living thing goes through during its life

Metamorphosis Changing forms dramatically over the course of a life cycle

Larvae This is the immature form of an insect that often undergoes metamorphosis. Larvae look very different than the adult bug they grow into thanks to the life cycle. Caterpillars are examples.

Chrysalis This is a hard shell made by a caterpillar, moth or other insect in which a metamorphosis happens.

Germination The process of a plant starting to grow from a seed

Seedling  A young plant that has recently started to grow from a seed, usually only a few inches tall, with roots, a stem and just a few leaves

3. Sequence and label a frog and butterfly life cycle.

4. Model the life cycle of a flower with this fun food lab.

5. Watch the life cycle of a chicken.

Speaking of butterflies…
