3. Introduction to Negative Numbers
- You’ve probably seen a number line before. They show integers in a line.
- Integer is just another name for a whole number (not a fraction or a decimal).
- Most number lines look something like this:

Some numbers are less than 0.
- We call those negative numbers.
- To imagine them, it can help to see a number line going up and down, like this flagpole:

- In this picture, the flagpole is 7 feet tall above ground, with the green ground at 0.
- The flagpole also extends 2 feet underground.
- The flagpole is longer than 7 feet, but 2 feet are underground.
- Usually, we see a number line that includes negative numbers, going sideways and looking more like this:

- Remember, integer means whole number (not a fraction or a decimal).
