We will relate decimals to money.
I will express quantities of money using place values of tenths and hundredths.
1. Complete warmup.
2. Let’s look at decimals in money.
There are 10 dimes in a dollar.
So… 1 dime is 1/10 of a dollar.
It’s written like this: $0.10
The 1 is in the tenths place.
That means… 1 penny is 1/100 of a dollar.
It’s written like this: $0.01
The 1 is in the hundredths place.
NOTE: Money always have 2 decimal places for change.
Sometimes, calculators will only show you 1 place instead of 2.
- There is 1 dollar.
- There is 5 in the tenths (dimes) place.
- There is 5 in the tenths (dimes) place.
- What is the number for nothing?
- What should you add in the hundredths place for pennies?
So this calculator is showing us $1.50
