We will examine how time is expressed on analog clocks.

I will visually identify periods of time as fractions on an analog clock face.

1. Complete warmup.

2. Review fractions and skip count minutes.

• Fraction of a whole
• 5 minute intervals
• Clock fractions and skip counting (2 pages)

3. Divide a clock into fractions.

• Notice that the hour has 60 minutes.
• 1/2 of an hour is 30 minutes.
• 1/4 of an hour is 15 minutes. Remember, in math we say “one fourth.” In regular life we say “quarter.” So 15 minutes is a quarter of an hour.

You will need three clockfaces:

Directions

• On your first clock face, color each half a different color.
• They can be any two colors.

• On your second clock face, color each quarter a different color.
• Again, they can be any colors

• On your third clock face, color each 5 minute segment a different color.
• Each section will represent both 5 minutes, and 1 room that the hour hand travels through.
• Repeat your colors in a pattern if you don’t have 12 different colors.
