6. A Word of Caution About the Hour Hand
- The hands go around the clock in a direction called clockwise.
- If you’re looking at the top half of the clock, it goes from left to right, like you’re reading a book.
- If you forget which way is clockwise, just look at the top of the clock and think about where your eyes would go if you were reading a sentence, then follow it all the way around.
- As the hour hand is moving clockwise, it points directly at a number when that hour begins. When it it 1:00, the hour hand will point to the 1, then slowly move toward the 2.
- In the picture below, the clock shows 1:50. It’s almost 2:00. The hour hand is much closer to the 2 than the 1, but it isn’t yet 2:00.
- You can’t figure out the time by finding the number that is closest to the hour hand.
- Think of each hour as having its own separate room on the clock face.
- When the hour hand is pointing directly at a number, it’s going through the door to that number’s room.
- The hour hand stays in that number’s room unit it enters the next door.

- The hour hand is in which number’s room right now? 10
- Judging only by the hour hand (don’t worry about minutes right now), it is sometime after 10:00
- Is it AM or PM right now? It is impossible to tell without more information.
