7.12 Measurement and data. The student applies mathematical process standards to use statistical representations to analyze data. The student is expected to:
7.4.E convert between measurement systems, including the use of proportions and the use of unit rates.
We will explore how people began tracking and measuring time.

- Imagine how different life was before we could keep accurate time.
- Do you think people used phrases like “on time” or “late” as often?
- Imagine scheduling your life according to sunrise, midday and sunset, all based on our view of the sun.
- Ancient Chinese people who used water clocks and candle clocks also made incense clocks that would change smell at certain intervals.
- The one pictured below used sound as well as smell to mark passing time. As the incense burned slowly in a straight line, it would burn through the string as it reached it, causing the attached marbles to fall. This made a bell-like noise at regular intervals.
