7.3 Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to add, subtract, multiply, and divide while solving problems and justifying solutions. The student is expected to:
7.3.A add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers fluently; and
We will demonstrate regrouping using paper currency.
I will subtract multi-digit numbers.
1. Complete warmup.

2. Watch video.
3. Let’s try some together.

Base 10 subtraction with regrouping
4. Now, let’s shift our thinking to money.
We’ll be using the same skills we just did, but this time our place value “blocks” are bills.
5. Practice regrouping with money.
Let’s get in pairs and play a game of Money Roll: BIG $PENDER Edition.
Instructions:
- Start on the left side of the board and work your way to the right. ——>
- Begin with $100
- Whatever you roll, take that much out of your $100 and remove it from your board.
- This game is about SPENDING money. You will be subtracting.
- Check to see if you need to break your larger bills to pay. If you do, exchange your bills for the next largest, making sure the amounts match.
- Keep your money in their columns.
- Every time your roll, check if you need to make change.
- You win when you run out of money.
- You can use a calculator.
Here is your gameboard…
You’ll notice that it’s set up differently than it has been before. That’s because you’re starting with $100, with the goal of spending it all.

Here are some virtual dice.
