8.11.C recognize human dependence on ocean systems and explain how human activities such as runoff, artificial reefs, or use of resources have modified these systems.
We will explore the ocean habitat.
I will investigate how human activities affect ocean life.
1. Watch video.
2. Investigate how plastic settles in the ocean.
- We have already learned that The Great Pacific Garbage Patch contains tons of floating plastic.
- Does all plastic float?
- Test a variety of plastic objects. Predict whether they will float or sink.
- It’s ok if your prediction isn’t correct! That’s how science works.
- Think about how your results affect ocean life. Is there any place in the ocean safe from pollution?
3. Abracadabra… You’re a sea animal! Try to escape the plastic.
- Remember this guy from Happy Feet?
- He had plastic stuck around his neck. This is a big problem for many animals that live or hunt in the ocean!
- Wrap a rubber band around your thumb and pinky (see the picture below).
- Now make your hand into a beak or mouth.
- Pretend you’re a seabird or turtle. Try to get the rubber band off without using your other hand or scraping it against something that wouldn’t be in the ocean.
4. Dive deeper with angler fish.
Speaking of the ocean…
Why do whales swim in salt water?
Because pepper makes them sneeze.
