7.7. Force, motion, and energy. The student knows that there is a relationship between force, motion, and energy. The student is expected to:

We will explore six different types of simple machines.
I will identify common, household simple machines.
1. Watch video.
2. Identify simple machines found in your home.
Inclined Plane A simple machine that has a gently sloped surface so it can be used to move objects upwards with less force. Ramps are examples of inclined planes.

Screw An inclined plane wrapped around a center rod. A surprising example of a screw is a spiral staircase.

Wedge A simple machine that gets thinner at one end that is used to split material such as wood. A knife is an example of a wedge.

Lever A plank that rests on something underneath and moves up and down. Scissors and tongs are levers.

Pulley A wheel and rope that can change the direction of a force. A flagpole uses a pulley to raise the flag.

Wheel and Axle simple machine used to move objects across a distance using a round part (wheel) and a long part (axle). Cars have wheels and axles.

3. Engineer and construct a pulley system.
