8.6 Force, motion, and energy. The student knows that there is a relationship between force, motion, and energy. The student is expected to:
8.6.C investigate and describe applications of Newton’s three laws of motion such as in vehicle restraints, sports activities, amusement park rides, Earth’s tectonic activities, and rocket launches.
We will explore forces of motion.
I will test the relationship between an object’s motion and the forces acting on it.

3. Review vocabulary.
Hydroplane This is when a thin film of water gets between your tires and the road, so that for a moment, your car isn’t touching the road. This is sometimes called aquaplane.

Black Ice is extra slippery, invisible ice on the road.

Fog is a thick haze made of tiny water droplets in the air. It’s like a cloud that’s sitting on the ground.

Sleet is a mix of ice pellets, snow and rain.

4. Model how surface friction affects the motion of vehicles.

- Set up a ramp, leaned against a table going to the floor.
- Cover the ramp with a material (denim, sandpaper, corduroy, aluminum foil, etc.)
- Place a small toy car at the top of the ramp and release it. (Use the same toy for each trial.)
- Measure how far the car traveled on your material. Record your results on your lab report found here.
- Repeat the experiment, using a different material. Compare your results.
- Race two similar cars on two different surfaces.
