7.6. Matter and energy. The student knows that matter has physical and chemical properties and can undergo physical and chemical changes. The student is expected to distinguish between physical and chemical changes in matter.
8.5.E investigate how evidence of chemical reactions indicates that new substances with different properties are formed and how that relates to the law of conservation of mass.
We will demonstrate conservation of matter after changing a state of matter from liquid to sold.

1. Review vocabulary and complete quiz.
Matter is anything that has weight and takes up space.

Conserve Saved or kept the same

Law of Conservation of Matter This tells us that the amount of matter stays the same even when a substance changes form.

Dissolve To mix in with another substance. For example: when salt is added to water, it forms saltwater.


2. Create butter by churning heavy cream.
- Weigh your mason jar filled with heavy cream on the food scale and record your reading.
- Churn your heavy cream into butter by taking turns shaking it. Pass it around from person to person. This may take a few minutes.
- Take a second reading and record your results. Compare them with your first measurement.
