TEKS & Objectives
7.6. Matter and energy. The student knows that matter has physical and chemical properties and can undergo physical and chemical changes. The student is expected to distinguish between physical and chemical changes in matter.
7.2.B design and implement experimental investigations by making observations, asking well defined questions, formulating testable hypotheses, and using appropriate equipment and technology
We will investigate the properties and purposes of materials.
I will experimentally test the properties of a common consumer good.
1. Watch video.
Generation genius video: Material Properties and Purposes (K-2)
2. Review vocabulary and complete quiz.
Flexibility is how easily something can bend.

Strength is how strong something is.

Stretchiness is how easily something can be pulled apart and returned back to its original shape.

Absorbency is how well something can soak up a liquid like water.
“Absorbant and yellow and porous is he!”

3. Do the absorbency bead (diaper) activity from the Generation Genius video or skip to the next activity.
4. Test the strength or absorbency of two brands of paper towels.
- You can pour a few tablespoons of water on an empty table and see how many papertowels of each brand are needed to absorb the whole amount.
- Remember to make it a fair test by using the same amount of water each time, and making sure the paper towel sections you test are the same size.
- The video below demonstrates an alternative investigation: They test durability of each brand of paper towel once wet.
Speaking of today’s investigation…
Did you hear about the cowboy who wore a hat made of paper towels?
He had a bounty on his head.
5. “Genius Challenge – Material Properties and Purposes”
