Matter is anything that has weight and takes up space.

Density determines if something will float or sink.

Solubility measures how well one thing can dissolve in another.

Conductivity measures how well something can allow electricity to flow through it.

3. Experiment with density and buoyancy (an object’s ability to float).
Change the density of water to cause an egg to float.
- Fill two glasses with warm tap water.
- Carefully place an egg in one glass.
- In the second glass, stir sugar or salt into the water one tablespoon at a time, stirring to dissolve.
- Carefully lower your second egg into the water with added salt or sugar.
- Count how many tablespoons of salt or sugar you need to make the water denser than the egg, causing it to float.

Test the density of common household objects by seeing if they float in water.
- The denser the object, the further it will sink into the water.


Make a boat out of aluminum foil.

- Wad some aluminum foil into a ball and drop it into a clear bowl of water.
- Depending on how tightly the foil is balled, it will sink to the bottom.
- Now fold a sheet of foil into a simple boat.
- When the foil is stretched out over the water, it’s density changes and allows it to float.
- Drop pennies into your boat one-by-one and see how many pennies are needed to sink your boat.
