7.6. Matter and energy. The student knows that matter has physical and chemical properties and can undergo physical and chemical changes. The student is expected to distinguish between physical and chemical changes in matter.

8.5.E investigate how evidence of chemical reactions indicates that new substances with different properties are formed and how that relates to the law of conservation of mass.

We will explore what happens to matter when it is changed in chemical or physical reaction.

I will demonstrate conservation of matter after dissolving drink mix in water.

2. Review vocabulary.

Matter is anything that has weight and takes up space.

Conserve Saved or kept the same

Law of Conservation of Matter This tells us that the amount of matter stays the same even when a substance changes form.

Dissolve To mix in with another substance. For example: when salt is added to water, it forms saltwater.

3. Create a physical reaction by dissolving flavored drink powder into water.
