We will explore the components of plant and animal cells using models.

Cells Cells are the tiny, basic building blocks of all living things.

Organelle tiny, specialized structures inside a cell that act like “little organs”. Just as your heart, lungs, and brain have special jobs to keep your body working, organelles have special jobs—like making energy, breaking down waste, or storing nutrients—to keep the cell alive and healthy.

Nucleus This organelle is the “brain” or control center of a cell. It’s usually the biggest “organelle” or inside part and it’s usually at the center. Both plant and animal cells have a nucleus.

Cytoplasm The thick, jelly-like substance that fills up a cell, and holds everything in place. It’s pictured as light green here.

Cell Membrane These are the thin, flexible outer skin that surrounds every cell, acting like a security guard. It keeps the right things in the cell and pushes the wrong things out.
