We will explore how the respiratory system provides oxygen to the body.
I will make a working model of the respiratory system.

2. Review vocabulary.
Respiratory System This is a system of organs that bring oxygen into your body and gets rid of carbon dioxide. It works closely with the heart, which moves oxygen around the body with blood.
Lungs The pair of spongy, air-filled organs in the chest that takes in oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide. The are the primary components of the respiratory system.
Trachea This is a tube in your neck and chest that acts as the main airway for breathing. It is also called your windpipe.
Diaphram The thin, dome-shaped muscle below your lungs that serves as the main muscle for breathing. It acts like a plunger; it flattens and moves down to let you breathe in, then moves up to force air out.

3. Make a working model of the lungs.
Your’s will look something like this when it’s finished.
Steps to complete:
- 1. Color your lungs and trachea pink.
- 2. Tape two straws together in an upside down Y shape
- 3. Tape a balloon at each of the short, bent ends, being sure to make a good seal so air cannot escape.
- 4. Place your straws over the printed trachea and lungs, as pictured above.
- 5. Color your mouth and nose.
- 6. Tape or glue them over the top of your straws, as pictured above.
- 7. Gently try inflating your lungs, just a little, to show movement of the lungs.
Here is a video demonstrating the tricky part (constructing the moving parts). Yours will look a little different when finished.
