Light source is an object that can give off light. The sun, a campfire and lightening are all light sources.

Opaque is an object that light cannot pass through; it makes a shadow.

Translucent is an object that light can pass partially through; it makes a light shadow.

Transparent is an object that light can pass through; it does not make a shadow.


3. Try the DIY from the Generation Genius video above.
- You can use any transparent or translucent surface that you have handy if you don’t have chip lids.
- Plastic Ziploc bags and translucent plastic to-go containers work as well.
4. Create shadow puppets on a white background.
- Follow the steps in the video below.
- Try making more shadow shapes from your imagination!
Extension Activity:
Create a model of light on 3 kinds of surfaces.
- Use clear plastic, wax paper and construction paper to demonstrate transparency, translucence and opacity.
- Place each surface over a bright line. Yarn was used in the picture.
- Compare and contrast how we see the line in each example.

Speaking of light…
