7.6. Matter and energy. The student knows that matter has physical and chemical properties and can undergo physical and chemical changes. The student is expected to distinguish between physical and chemical changes in matter.

1. Review vocabulary and complete quiz.
Physical change A type of change in which a new substance is NOT formed. For example: water boiling or cut paper.

Chemical change A type of change in which a new substance is formed. For example: releasing heat or light energy.


2. Watch a video of an acid-base reaction.
QUICK CONVERSION: 100 milliliters is just under half a cup.
3. Try the Experiments Featured in the Videos Above
Draw ghost faces on your balloons if you want to!
4. Check your egg from yesterday.
- If you soaked an egg in vinegar yesterday, check it now to see it without it’s shell.
- Remember, the egg’s shell was dissolved in an acid base reaction.
- The shell was the base, and vinegar was the acid in the reaction.

5. Still have time? Test candy density (and bonus solubility!).
- Drop a variety of candies, one by one, into a container of water.
- Watch which floats and which sinks.
- The candy that sinks has a higher density than the water.
- The candy that floats has a lower density than the water.
- Drop some M&Ms in the water and watch the color dissolve in the water, leaving the candy.

6. Paint your pumpkin using neon paints and test the results with a UV flashlight (a blacklight).
