TEKS & Objectives
7.6. Matter and energy. The student knows that matter has physical and chemical properties and can undergo physical and chemical changes. The student is expected to distinguish between physical and chemical changes in matter.
7.1.A demonstrate safe practices during laboratory and field investigations as outlined in Texas Education Agency-approved safety standards
We will observe phases of matter.
I will identify and compare chemical and physical changes.
1. Watch video.
- The dye in the candy shell dissolves in the water.
- It changes from a solid to a liquid.
- This is a physical change.
2. Review vocabulary.
Physical change A type of change in which a new substance is NOT formed. For example: water boiling or cut paper.

Chemical change A type of change in which a new substance is formed. For example: burning something.

In the experiments below, identify whether a physical or chemical reaction is taking place.
3. Try the Skittles activity featured in the video above.

4. Test the acid level of sour candy.
This is an acid. Acids often taste sour. We can also tell if foods have acid by seeing how they react to baking soda, which is a base.

- They used Pixie Sticks, but we can also dissolve sour gummy candies (like Sour Patch Kids or Sour Worms) in warm water and straining out the gummy bits. We’ll end up with some fruity smelling brownish or grayish liquid.
- We can test the water the candy’s sour salts have been dissovling in to see if they produce bubbles when baking soda is added.
- Are the candies with the strongest sour flavor producing the most bubbles?
5. Prepare for a laboratory investigation.
- Carefully place a raw egg in vinegar.
- Check it tomorrow to see how the acid (vinegar) and base (egg shell) reaction has dissolved the outer eggshell, leaving the clear membrane in place.

6. Paint your pumpkin using neon paints and test the results with a UV flashlight (a blacklight).

Speaking of Halloween…
What do you call two witches sharing an apartment?
Broommates
