8.6 Force, motion, and energy. The student knows that there is a relationship between force, motion, and energy. The student is expected to:
8.6.C investigate and describe applications of Newton’s three laws of motion such as in vehicle restraints, sports activities, amusement park rides, Earth’s tectonic activities, and rocket launches.
We will explore forces of motion.
I will test the relationship between an object’s motion and the forces acting on it.

Pattern A series of repeating events

Pattern of Motion When a moving object makes the same pattern again and again

Pendulum A weight on a string that hangs from a single point. It swings and creates a pattern of motion!

Friction This is the force resisting, or acting against, motion. It slows things down.


3. Try the DIY in the video OR make pendulum sand art.
- Sand art is similar to the DIY activity in the previous video, but uses impressions in sand to create temporary art, rather than dripping paint.
- Use a tripod as in the video, or you can use two empty paper towels rolls taped to a cardboard base to provide stability, with a third paper towel roll taped horizontally to the top, to create structure from which to hang a string.
- Tie the string to a screwdriver (preferably Phillips) to make your pendulum.
- Suspend it over a wide bowl of sand.
